Headlining the long weekends racing festivities was the Rosehill Gardens Racecourse Golden Slipper Day, which featured a fantastic array of elite horses competing in great races, one of which was the Group 1 The BMW (2400m).
Held as the fifth race of nine, The BMW saw 12 horses start the staying distance event, all vying to take home a share of the $225,000 prize purse.
It was the Nigel Blackiston-trained Littorio who finished the event triumphant – coming away with a career topping performance. The five-year-old had overcome a hoof injury for Saturday’s start, and came from the tail end of the field to cross the line first.
It was the Nigel Blackiston-trained Littorio who finished the event triumphant – coming away with a career topping performance.
He beat Zavite, trained by Anthony Cummings by a head, with the Kevin Moses-trained No Wine No Song finishing third by a length.
Coming into the 2010 The BMW as favourite was Theseo who finished fourth, and despite leading the race, could not prove himself over the staying distance.
Daffodil and Speed Gifted were another two horses vying for the title of the 2010 The BMW, but finished fifth and a disappointing 11th respectively, in what was a case of the underdogs got away.
Next on the schedule for Littorio, who has now won his second Group 1 event, will be the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on the 24th of April.
Also taking place on Saturday was the illustrious Group 1 Golden Slipper Stakes (1200m) which saw the unstoppable Crystal Lily continue her fantastic racing streak, the Group 1 George Ryder Stakes (1500m) which provided Danleigh with his third Group 1 win, and the Group 3 Star Kingdom Stakes (1100m) taken out by the sprinter Swift Alliance.
