A particularly talented list of 17 runners has nominated for a position in this weekend’s Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens, highlighted by several previous winners at the top level of Australian racing.
Aiming to the return to the winner’s circle following a less-than-convincing run in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) two weeks ago, Fiorente has been included in nominations for the 2014 BMW.
Fiorente steadily built to the task at hand over a successful 2014 spring campaign, winning the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m), finishing third behind Shamus Award in the Group 1 Cox Plate (2040m) on October 26th before producing a strong turn of foot to win the major Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November.
Having returned to the track in typically scintillating form this preparation, the talented Monsun entire looked well and truly out of contention in the Group 1 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up, before again producing a second-to-none final straight sprint to finish nearly a length in the clear.
Delivering trainer Gai Waterhouse and jockey Damien Oliver a maiden victory in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) second-up, the leading Randwick based trainer is confident of adding another crown to the pile in this weekend’s The BMW.
Also included in nominations for the 2014 BMW is Ranvet Stakes champion Silent Achiever.
Based in New Zealand under the care of leading trainer Roger James, Silent Achiever has amassed an impressive nine wins and five places from only 24 race starts to date.
Arguably hitting peak form over her current preparation, Silent Achiever returned to the track in 2014 with a good win in the Retina Specialists Handicap (1500m) before claiming her second Group 1 title in the New Zealand Guineas (2000m) on March 8th.
Only rated an outside chance is the Ranvet Stakes, the exciting O’Reilly mare received a sensational ride from in-form jockey Nash Rawiller, who was able to take advantage of Silent Achiever’s notable turn of foot to beat Her Majesty The Queen-owned Carlton House on the line.
Geared towards an appearance in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m), James is confident Silent Achiever will continue her perfect start to 2014 this weekend.
Trainer Chris Waller is poised to dominate the final field of the 2014 BMW, having nominated Brigantin, Foreteller, Hawkspur, Junoob and Moriarty.
Beginning his career under the care of leading French trainer Andre Fabre in Europe, Brigantin is yet to find peak condition since transferring to Waller’s Rosehill Stables at the end of 2012, but has displayed some consistent form over four races this time in.
Unlucky to finish third to Fiorente in the Australian Cup most notably this preparation, Foreteller was arguably one of the most consistent Group 1 racehorses of the 2013 spring; consistently finishing in the top four and finding the line in the clear of resounding favourite Puissance De Lune to win the Group 1 Makybe Diva Stakes (1600m) on September 7th.
Claiming the Group 2 Chelmsford Stakes (1600m) near the beginning of his 2013 spring preparation, Hawkspur was touted as one to watch over the major races of the season but was unable to return to the winner’s circle; closing a largely disappointing campaign 20th in the Melbourne Cup.
Having steadily built to the task in three races this season, Waller is confident of a complete return to form for the well-trialled Purrealist gelding in The BMW.
Experiencing something of a purple patch of form, Junoob has secured three wins and two places from six starts this preparation, including the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m) last time out.
Moriarty is undeniably the ‘unknown factor’ of the Waller stables leading into the 2014 BMW, having produced a so-far up-and-down preparation in 2014.
