A talented field of 11 has been confirmed for this weekend’s Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens, highlighted by several previous winners at the highest level of Australian racing, including two Melbourne Cup champions in Fiorente and Green Moon.
Fiorente steadily built to the task over an impressive 2013 spring campaign, winning the Group 2 Dato’Tan Chin Nam Stakes (1600m) and finishing third behind Shamus Award in the Group1 Cox Plate (2040m) before producing a memorable sprint down the final straight to win the Group 1 Melbourne Cup (3200m) on the first Tuesday of November.
Having returned to the track in typically scintillating form this time in, the Monsun entire easily overcame poor position rounding the final bend to win the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m) first-up, before hunting down Green Moon in the dying stages of the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) to deliver trainer Gai Waterhouse another major title.
Despite fading late for seventh in the Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m) last time out, Waterhouse is confident her stable star will return to the winner’s circle this weekend, particularly having drawn the ideal inside barrier.
While yet to claim another race win since strolling home in the 2012 edition of the race that stops a nation, Green Moon has continued to produce a strong and consistent racing career, particularly over his current preparation in finishing fourth in the Peter Young Stakes first-up and second in the Australian Cup most recently.
With a long view towards this year’s Melbourne Cup, trainer Robert Hickmott has underlined the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) as the major target for the well-contested Montjeu entire this preparation, and is confident of carrying winning form into the April 19th event from barrier 7 and with in-form jockey Hugh Bowman on board for the first time.
Hickmott will be offered two good chances of success in The BMW, having also accepted a position for classy stayer Mourayan.
Amassing five wins and 14 laces from 44 race starts to date, talented eight-year-old Mourayan will line up for the 2014 BMW as one of the most experienced horses in the field, and will be aiming to continue a good run of form that has delivered an unlucky second in the Peter Young Stakes and fourth in the Australian Cup most recently.
Comfortable winner of last year’s Sydney Cup, the Alhaarth entire will have to overcome the slightly awkward barrier 10 this weekend ahead of a likely title defence on the 19th.
Having drawn barrier 8, trainer Murray Baker is confident four-time Group 1 champion It’s A Dundeel can overcome the talented The BMW field this weekend after returning in typically competitive form.
Impressively claiming the three-year-old triple crown and finishing an unlucky second in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth Stakes (2000m) over the 2013 autumn, the talented High Chaparral entire was arguably most impressive when claiming the Group 1 Underwood Stakes (1800m) on September 21st and delivering equine superstar Atlantic Jewel her only race defeat.
Geared towards an appearance in the Queen Elizabeth Stakes, Baker is confident regular jockey James McDonald will again get the best from his horse in The BMW.
While unable to match the late pace of the Australian Cup first-up, Voleuse De Coeurs is offered good chance of securing a maiden win down under this weekend, having drawn the ideal barrier 2.
Winning the major Group 1 Irish St. Leger (2816m) in September before leaving the care of leading Irish trainer Dermot Weld, the Teofilo mare has reportedly taken to work well and will find The BMW in peak condition.
Ranvet Stakes champion Silent Achiever (barrier 4) has also been included in the final field for the 2014 BMW, and will be joined by Foreteller (barrier 9), Sertorius (barrier 6), Brigantin (barrier 5), Angola (barrier 3) and Let’s Make Adeal (barrier 11).
