Securing a record third second-place finish in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) in 2014, a decision will be made this week as to whether talented veteran Red Cadeaux will return to Australia for a preparation beginning with the Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill on March 28th.
Jumping from the gates well in his fourth Melbourne Cup tilt on November 4th, jockey Gerald Mosse pushed Red Cadeaux wide for a good portion of the 3200m course at Flemington, but still managed to kick well to finish second behind runaway winner Protectionist.
Revealing the nine-year-old has taken well to a brief freshen-up and subsequent return to work, trainer Ed Dunlop’s Racing Manager Chris Humpleby told the Racing Post the son of Cadeaux Genereux has also been included in nominations for three races at Dubai’s Meydan course this time in including the Dubai Gold Cup, and may target those events instead of a trip to Australia for the 2015 The BMW and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m).
“It will be Mr Arculli’s (owner, Ron Arculli) shout, and Ed is due to speak to him on Thursday, but we’ve made the entry now as supplementary entries are expensive,” Humpleby said.
“He also has the three nominations at Meydan, and we don’t know yet if he has been accepted, although you would think he would probably get in all three.
“Again, it will be down to Mr Arculli, but I think the Gold Cup might be where they are leaning this time if he goes to Dubai.
“He is being prepared again for his travels, wherever they might take him. He looks fantastic and everyone is happy with him.”
Securing a commendable race record of seven wins and a further 18 minor places from his 48 start career so far, Red Cadeaux placed fourth in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2671m) upon returning to racing for his most recent preparation; progressing to seven the Group 3 September Stakes (2414m) leading into the Melbourne Cup and placing a credible sixth in the major Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m) most recently on December 14th.
