2015 The BMW Final Field and Barrier Draw

March 25th, 2015

Just 12 runners have been confirmed in the final field for Saturday’s featured Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens; the notable omission being popular gelding Red Cadeaux who will be kept for the Sydney Cup in two weeks’ time.

Trainer Chris Waller is set to launch a three-pronged attack on the 2015 The BMW after included talented stable mates Who Shot Thebarman, Beaten Up and Opinion in the final field.

Securing eight wins and a further three minor place finishes over his 18 start career so far, Who Shot Thebarman began his racing career under the guidance of Mark Oulaghan in his native New Zealand before transferring to the care of Waller prior to last spring.

Taking out the Group 1 Auckland Cup (3200m) in his final tilt across the Tasman, the Yamanin Vital gelding was unable to make an impact when ninth in the Sydney Cup, but quickly found impressive condition in spring when winning each of the Sofitel Girls Day Out Handicap (2000m) and Group 3 The Bart Cummings (2520m) before running an impressive third in the Melbourne Cup (3200m) most notably.

Placing fifth in the Group 1 Chipping Norton Stakes (1600m) and fourth in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) this time in, Who Shot Thebarman is sure to relish a step-up to 2400m this weekend and will leave from barrier 9.

Beaten Up has steadily built to the task over four starts this year and will also enjoy an increase in running distance to a mile and a half in the 2015 The BMW.

Clearly underdone when 14th in the Group 1 CF Orr Stakes (1400m) and tenth in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes (1800m), Beaten Up ran a credible fifth in Sky High Stakes a fortnight ago and is sure to receive a gem of a ride from Glyn Schofield from the central barrier 7.

Opinion was a standout performer for Waller over the 2014 Autumn Carnival and appears set for a return to the winner’s circle this weekend.

Winning the Listed Parramatta Cup (1900m) before finishing second in each of the Listed Randwick City Stakes (2000m), Group 3 NE Manion Cup (2400m) and Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m), Opinion was unable to make much of an impact over his first three spring starts, but responded when in taking out the Group 1 The Metropolitan (2500m) on October 4th most notably.

Running eighth in the Chipping Norton and second in the Sky High Stakes, the Oasis Dream gelding returns to his pet running distance in The BMW and has been confirmed to be partnered by regular jockey Tye Angland.

Godolphin is spoiled for choice with talented imports currently, and are offered a great chance of further success in The BMW after trainer John O’Shea confirmed Hartnell in the final field.

Beginning his racing tenure under Mark Johnston in Britain, Hartnell was given little chance for success when lining up for his Australian debut in the Chipping Norton, but finished an agonizingly-close second to Contributer after displaying an exceptional turn of foot.

Having won the Sky High Stakes by two lengths last time out, Hartnell will leave from the ideal barrier 3 with leading hoop James McDonald aboard in The BMW.
