Popular international raider Red Cadeaux will not take his place in Saturday’s featured Group 1 The BMW (2400m) at Rosehill Gardens and will now head straight into the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) on Day 2 of The Championships.
Posting a commendable race record of seven wins and a further 18 minor place finishes over his 49 start career so far, Red Cadeaux etched his name into Australian racing folklore in November when placing second in the Melbourne Cup for a record third time.
Having run on for an impressive fifth in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington a fortnight ago, trainer Ed Dunlop confirmed the nine-year-old has come out of the first-up run well, however the team has decided to take every precaution possible to allow for the greatest chance for success in the 2015 Sydney Cup.
“We have decided not to run Red Cadeaux in the BMW Stakes at Rosehill on Saturday, instead preferring to go straight to the Sydney Cup two weeks later,” Dunlop told Racing Victoria.
“It would have been tough to ask a nine-year-old to run in three Group 1 races in the space of a month.
“While he has come out of the Australian Cup in good form, we hope to maximise his chance of success at The Championships by giving him a little extra time before the two-mile showpiece at Randwick.”
Winner of the 2012 edition of the Group 1 Hong Kong Vase (2400m), Red Cadeaux posted several impressive results over a short 2014 racing calendar; placing a credible sixth in the Group 1 Dubai World Cup (2000m) in the Middle East first-up before a luckless run for 14th in the Group 1 Tenno Sho (3200m) in Japan in May.
Running fourth in the Group 3 Geoffrey Freer Stakes (2600m) in Britain leading into the Melbourne Cup, the son of Cadeaux Genereux ran a positive sixth in the 2014 edition of the Hong Kong Vase following the Race That Stops a Nation.
The 2015 The BMW final field and barrier draw is due to be completed and released by midday, Wednesday.
