Hartnell Wins 2015 The BMW

March 30th, 2015

Talented British import Hartnell has continued Godolphin’s impressive run through the 2015 Autumn Carnival at Rosehill Gardens; displaying a keen turn of foot in the final straight to take out the featured Group 1 The BMW (2400m) with relative ease.

Jumping from the gates well, Hartnell settled in prime position within the field eleven and allowed the race’s early leaders to set a reasonable tempo away from the barriers and approaching the bend.

Finding the final straight wide and with plenty to do, jockey James McDonald steadily pressed the Authorized gelding forward, who responded with an incredible kick to pull clear of resounding favourite To The World, hitting the line a length and a half in the clear of the Japanese raider; Beaten Up boxing on for third.

McDonald delivered an exceptional ride aboard Hartnell in the 2015 The BMW and was thrilled to deliver Godolphin another victory at the highest level.

“I am very fortunate to be riding for Sheik Mohammed and his global operation,” McDonald said.

“We have the best bunch of people that work under John and it is really paying dividends.

“I am so thankful for all the support that they give me.

“I knew he was there, he dropped off at about the 1200 behind me and something happened midrace with Opinion I think breaking down and I lost several lengths then and I thought I was in a bit of stride then, but I knew I was on the superior stayer and I was just so happy that I have come out on top.”

Trainer John O’Shea was understandably thrilled with Hartnell’s 2015 The BMW victory and revealed he will likely next contest the Group 1 Sydney Cup (3200m) in a fortnight.

“Doing the form there looked to be two very special horses here today and when they cleared out it was very exciting,” O’Shea said.

“They have a lot of time invested into what goes on here, it is a big team performance and they are just great cogs in the wheel.

“I don’t do it all on my own and I’ve said that all along.

“Between James, Tommy, Darren and Paul Reid back at Osborne, we just have a great team of people guided by John Ferguson, Sheik Mohammed and Henry here.

“It is very exciting to see them all here and enjoying it because they all contribute.”
