2016 The BMW an Option for Set Square

December 16th, 2015

Trainer Ciaron Maher has been thrilled with the condition and class displayed by Set Square in 2015 and is confident the mare will return an even greater racing prospect during a 2016 Autumn Carnival preparation likely to be geared towards a race like The BMW (2400m).

Posting three wins and a further five minors through twelve career starts so far, Set Square immediately stamped herself as one to watch via a standout debut campaign through the 2014 Spring Carnival, highlighted by success in the Group 1 Crown Oaks (2500m) in only her fourth competitive appearance.

Maher told Racing.com he was pleased with the efforts mustered by the four-year-old daughter of Reset in 2015 without being able to return to the winner’s circle, and is confident she will return in sharp form in 2016 for a strong Autumn Carnival campaign.

“She was very raw as a three-year-old and just going through that last spring campaign she just seemed to settle down and held her condition really well,” Maher said.

“She’s still relatively lightly-raced and I think this autumn campaign she’ll be better again and will probably be even better next spring.

“She’s just a mare that it all came really quick for and I think she’s still learning and still putting it all together.”

Returning this year for a close second behind Sweet And Speedy in the Group 3 The Vanity (1400m), Set Square continued to impress when third in the Group 3 Schweppervescence Trophy (1600m) and was returned to the paddock after failing to figure when eleventh in the Group 1 Vinery Stud Stakes (2000m).

Resuming in spring for second in a Caulfield minor over 1400m on August 29th, Set Square progressed to fifth amongst classy company in the Spring Is The Season Handicap (1700m) before running an impressive third in the Group 1 Turnbull Stakes (2000m) on October 4th.

Unable to maintain a strong early pace when eleventh in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) on October 17th, the mare out of Dynastar has not been seen at the races since running on for fifth in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes (2000m) on October 31st.
