Waller Dominates 2016 The BMW Nominations

March 21st, 2016

Sydney’s leading horseman Chris Waller dominates the early The BMW 2016 nominations for this weekend’s major at Rosehill Gardens Racecourse with four entries including early favourite Preferment.

Waller is yet to saddle-up a winner in the weight-for-age classic, but plays a strong hand numbers-wise in this year’s $1.5 million Group 1 The BMW (2400m) with four of the original 12 entries.

Racing NSW has extended nominations until Tuesday morning in a hope of attracting higher numbers in the Sydney Autumn Racing Carnival showdown that has a capacity field of 14 starters.

Current all-in The BMW odds at Ladbrokes.com.au have Waller’s Zabeel four-year-old Preferment as the early favourite after his protest win in the Group 1 Australian Cup (2000m) at Flemington.

He was second past the post to Awesome Rock but awarded the elite level on protest, his official third Group 1 success at Flemington.

The step up to 2400m is set to suit Preferment this weekend who has winning form up to 2500m as a former Victoria Derby winner.

Waller’s other best fancied entry is Who Shot Thebarman, a former Sydney Cup and Melbourne Cup placegetter who comes off a third in the Group 3 Sky High Stakes (2000m) at the track from March 12.

Also representing Waller is the imported Storm The Stars and reigning Sydney Cup winner Grand Marshal.

The Sky High Stakes produced last year’s The BMW winner, the John O’Shea-trained Hartnell (2015) completing the double Sir John Hawkwood aims for this year.

He is the $26 outsider in all-in The BMW betting to achieve the feat however despite the David Vandyke-trained Sir Percy seven-year-old boasting a strong second-up record to date of three wins and a second from five runs.

The close second favourite to win behind Preferment is Lee & Anthony Freedman’s German import Our Ivanhowe.

The six-year-old Soldier Hollow stallion ran third in the Group 1 Caulfield Cup (2400m) in the spring last look at this distance, and was last seen crossing only one and a half lengths away fifth in the Australian Cup.

The Australian Cup hasn’t produced a The BMW winner however since Cedarberg (7th) in 2011.

Caulfield Cup winner from October, the Murray Baker-trained Mongolian Khan is also in The BMW mix this Easter Saturday.

A four-year-old son of Holy Roman Emperor, he comes off a fifth to The United States in last Saturday’s Group 1 Ranvet Stakes (2000m), which has produced three of the past four The BMW winners.

Also nominated for a short seven day back-up is Montaigne, a three-year-old son of Road To Rock who was runner-up to ATC Derby-bound Tarzino in last weekend’s Group 1 Rosehill Guineas (2000m).

He is yet to race over further than that distance and if accepted into The BMW field is out to be the first three-year-old winner of the race since Fiveandahalfstar (2013) who trainer Anthony Cummings also prepared.

Other noteworthy The BMW entries include Australian Cup third placed Rising Romance who looks to join Silent Achiever (2014) as the most recent mares to beat home the boys in The BMW and the fellow David Hayes & Tom Dabernig-trained Almoonqith.

He ran last in the Australian Cup but was still only beaten three lengths, the Dynaformer stallion looking for his first win since the Listed Sandown Cup (3200m) in mid-November over The Offer (2nd) and Grand Marshal (3rd) who won the 2014 and 2015 Sydney Cup respectively.
