A total of 80 horses have been nominated to run in the $2.25 million The BMW, which guarantees the winner entry into the 2012 Melbourne Cup on November 6, 2012.

Four-year-old Helenus gelding Cedarberg went out as a $26 roughie in the The BMW markets but proved to be the best horse on the day overshadowing some of the top-rated gallopers in the country.

Raced closer to the rails than the rest of the field, Cedarberg was given a gun ride by jockey Damien Oliver.

Early frontrunners included the highly fancied but disappointing Descarado, upset Ranvet Stakes winner Zavite and the Lloyd Williams-owned Mourayan.

Oliver held Cedarberg back and on the inside, getting the shortcut and in the end getting the win.

After Mourayan hit the front at the 1800m, Cedarberg was able to burst into the clear when they opened up on the straight and take the lead with 200m left to travel.

Cedarberg held on well and on the line was 1 ¼ lengths ahead of Mourayan ($41) with Lloyd Williams’ second runner, improving Galileo four-year-old Linton, giving him two minor placings in the weight-for-age feature a further neck away in third.

Early favourites Descarado ($3.10) and Melbourne Cup runner-up Maluckyday ($3.40) were the disappointments of the race finishing sixth and seventh respectively.

Carey is now likely to focus on the major Cups, the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup, during the spring with Cedarberg.

Maluckyday opened as a $7 favourite on the very first 2011 BMW Stakes market and firmed on the back of a first up run where he failed to win but ran home strongly.

His second race, the Ranvet Stakes ,didn’t exactly go to plan though and he got back way too deep and failed to figure in the placings.
